I just wrapped up my second class of the week. Getting back in the swing of things after the holidays is not always easy, but I was excited to get back and see my students again. Turns out no one has been in the building since our last class so during class yesterday I could hear the mice in the ceiling. It was quite distracting, but my students didn’t even flinch.
Today’s class Neil and Samuel joined me. We talked about the New Year, Christmas and favorite memories. We also showed them photos some of you have sent of your blizzard that came through. I checked during class and the temperature in Greenwood was -11 degrees Celsius. It was fun to discuss that with the students. For you, it is hard to imagine houses with no A/C or heat like we have here. For them it is hard to imagine houses with heat so they are very concerned as to how you all will survive. I assured them you’ll stay in your homes in the heat and even your vehicles have heat to keep you warm if you drive somewhere. It is quite unfathomable for them, but fun to discuss and share.
The best part of class was a late Christmas gift we were able to bless them with. My parents brought Kirundi/English dictionaries to Kenya and we brought them here and I have been giving them to my students. Oh you should see their faces and their joy! Neil and Samuel both loved handing the dictionaries out and seeing the students expressions. I would have taken photos to share, but I too was enjoying the moment. They were very grateful.
Hope you too are enjoying getting back in the swing of things after your holiday break!
