Another one. Another nameless baby this week was found on the side of the street. I walked those streets. I can imagine the darkness of the night, the few flickering flashlights, and the sound of a baby’s cry in the empty drainage ditch on the side of the road. 2 babies, one boy and one girl, were found abandoned this week and are now at Nezerwa Centre orphanage in Burundi. As inflation continues to wreak havoc on this impoverished country, the only solution a mother finds is a dark ditch and a prayer. Though this is a criminal offense in Burundi, she has no hope of being able to provide for the needs of this child, and she knows it.
This is the battle in Burundi, and with extreme poverty. We are working to raise money for this orphanage to provide them with food daily. But we also see that their spiritual needs are of utmost importance. We are hoping to raise $7,000, so all the older children can have a trauma-informed 4-day spiritual retreat in April. Our partners on the ground have shared their concern for these orphans who are hearing the Gospel, but most have hardened hearts. They want to provide a spiritual retreat to care for these older orphans’ souls.
As we seek to raise that $7,000 for a retreat in April, the realities continue, abandoned babies come, and sickness sweeps through the orphanage. You know what it’s like for one member of the family to pass sickness to the others; well, imagine 54 children with weak immune systems.
God will defend them. God knows each and every nameless child crying across the world. He is not deaf to their needs. He knows them all, and He knows so much better than we do the needs of this specific orphanage. He didn’t take my family there for no reason. At least one reason He took us there was to be a voice for them. These older children are spiritually broken and hurting without hope. We want to help provide an opportunity of healing for them. These younger children struggle to have enough nourishment for their bodies to fight sickness, and they’re struggling. These newborn babies are helpless, and there’s little chance of survival without love and milk.
Please, give today. I don’t even mean you have to give financially. If you have the means, then please do give financially. But I do mean give of your time and yourself. Get on your knees and pray over these children. Pray for every child that God knows at Nezerwa Centre, and pray to the God who cares for every single abandoned child across the globe.
